Mixing / Mastering

Mixing

I’ve been mixing music for over 15 years – starting with my own songs, then branching out to friends, and then ultimately opening up my services to everyone. I approach mixing from an artist’s perspective, always staying focused on the heart of the song and the artistic intention behind it. One of the most transcendent experiences I have in life is when I’m clearing away layers of mud and harshness in a recording, revealing the jewel underneath: the song as it’s meant to be heard.

Mastering:

I generally don’t present myself as a mastering engineer, but people do occasionally ask me to master their music, and so far everyone has been quite happy with the results. Mastering is an extremely subtle art that can take a lifetime to become an expert in, and I have tons of respect for the people who dedicate themselves to it. But at the same time, if you recorded an entire album yourself with no budget, it can be hard to justify spending a thousand bucks on mastering. Sometimes you really just need a fresh set of ears on your project to find and fix any broad tonal and dynamics problems, get your songs sounding cohesive together, and get everything up to industry-standard loudness without sounding smooshed. That’s why I offer very reasonable mastering rates, and recommend my services primarily for home recorders and people on a budget.

Tape Bouncing:

Have a finished song or album that you just want bounced to tape and back? I can record your music onto either 1/4” tape or cassette 4-track, then record it back onto the computer. Sometimes this requires some light mastering to make sure that the music will stay in the “sweet spot”, above the tape noise and below the threshold of distortion. However, this is usually very simple to do, so I can charge low rates for this service.
